… is ‘Life’, or so said Albert Camus. The 1971 film ‘A Clockwork Orange’ declared that 'A man who cannot choose ceases to be man'. In our world of individuals, freedom and democracy, the experience and responsibility that comes from making our own choices is vital to our personal development.

Henry C Simons once said that “monopoly power must be abused. It has no use save abuse.” There may be a case to made for monopoly situations, but to be realistic and acceptable, they must benefit the general public and not just the monopolies themselves.
Noel Josephides is Managing Director of the UK’s Sunvil Holidays and a board member of ABTA. Not known for hiding his lamp under a bushel, Mr Josephides has recently expressed his concern that, with the collapse of Allbury Travel (Libra), the UK travel industry is moving steadily towards a ‘duopoly’ situation which is not healthy for customers. It is to be hoped that, in the wake of turmoil in the travel industry during 2009, some enterprising, displaced executive will see the opportunity to create a new venture to satisfy the age-old principles of supply & demand. In the commercial world there are a great many examples of arrogant monopolies, as they become complacent in their old age, creating just the right conditions for the emergence of new ideas and initiatives. As Henry DeMarest Lloyd said – “Monopoly is business at the end of its journey.” Maybe we should encourage Tui & Thomas Cook to gobble up everything on offer as it will only hasten the process of more and fairer competition. Now that would benefit customers!
